Pete Rhodes Nominated For Community Award

It has taken more than 50 years but the musical contribution of Peter Rhodes has finally been noted.
As an 11-year-old, he blew his first tentative tunes as an impressionable cornet player with Shirland Welfare Junior Band.

Today, at 63, Mr Reliable Rhythm has progressed to its bandmaster - having tirelessly trained young musicians since the 1970s.

And it is not only young musicians who have come under his careful and patient teaching.

This is demonstrated because Mr Rhodes has been nominated for an Evening Telegraph Community Champions Award by 52-year-old Geoff Noake, a recent pupil.

Mr Noake decided to take up the trombone when daughter Chloe joined the band eight years ago.

He said: "Peter takes no money from what he does, just enjoyment. He's there every Thursday night at practice and he's always so reliable.

"I just think that unsung heroes like him tend to get overlooked."

Band secretary Judith Beckett is thrilled that Mr Rhodes had received the recognition that his hard work deserved.

She said: "I think it's wonderful that he has been nominated for this award. He is always there for the children and always reliable."

Launched in conjunction with BBC Radio Derby, The Derbyshire building society and Derby County Football Club, the awards give people the chance to nominate family, friends or neighbours who they believe deserve recognition for their selfless work.

Mr Rhodes, of Park Close, Shirland, was amazed when he received the call telling him about the nomination.

He said: "I'm surprised and pleased that somebody has taken the time and trouble to show their appreciation.

"Of course, it's good for the band as well, as it promotes what we do and, hopefully, it might attract some new people."

At the moment, he has about 20 musicians, aged eight to 15, in his class.

Mr Noake, of Carr Lane, Dronfield, felt that Mr Rhodes deserved his nomination because of the boundless patience he shows to the new members.

He said: "When some kids get here they don't know one end of an instrument to the other. Peter shows them the ropes."
